HOW IT WORKS

Our therapists use evidence-based therapeutic methods, like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), to help our clients heal from past trauma. We understand each person’s story and history is unique, so we tailor our treatment approach to you. Through therapy, we’ll work to uncover the root of your trauma and understand how it is affecting you in the present. You’ll learn new coping skills and address negative beliefs.

Our therapists integrate mindfulness with trauma therapy, which involves teaching and practicing mindfulness meditation, relaxation exercises, guided imagery and breath-work so that you can build emotional regulation skills to use daily as well as during specific triggering situations.

When appropriate, EMDR therapy can be used to target unprocessed memories to identify and treat core issues responsible for distress, helping clients heal on a neurological, emotional, and somatic level.

  • Trauma is often complicated by underlying factors, we’ll also explore other aspects of your past while, at the same time, tackling challenges in the here and now. That means we’ll identify any history of trauma in your family and may look at your upbringing, childhood experiences, or teen years. Of course, you’ll always have control of the topics we cover and the pace we move.

  • Trauma refers to any experience that causes extreme distress and can stem from a wide range of events. Trauma that is not processed in the mind and body can progress into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is a specific mental health condition. Trauma and PTSD can lead us to feeling emotionally out of control, reactive, insecure, and afraid, sometimes even when there is no apparent reason to feel those ways.

  • EMDR utilizes the body and brain’s natural healing capacity. Through multiple mechanisms (performing rapid eye movements while taxing the working memory system), EMDR creates space for the brain to activate and heal memory networks tied to past trauma that are impact you in your present life.

    EMDR is more structured than traditional talk therapy, with a set process for sessions. As an evidence-based treatment, adherence to the process typically leads to the best results, but it may feel different or strange at first if you are used to traditional talk therapy. Come with an open mind. For the majority of people, it is highly effective, however it is not right for everyone. There is always an opportunity to adjust our approach at any point in the process.

  • You can expect my full presence in our sessions. I do not direct our sessions or come with an agenda. My clients bring in whatever is on their mind, or challenges and reflections that have come up in the past week. I will help you make connections, gain insight, and consider different perspectives. When needed I will gently challenge your narrative to make room for a different way of thinking or relating to a person or experience. Over time, you will begin to think and feel differently and see changes in your daily life.

    I also know how important it is to start feeling relief fast, so from the first time we meet I’ll support you in developing practical tools to help you better manage your symptoms.
